July Partnerships with Turkish Sisters in Spirit
The month of Ramadan brought several partnerships with our Sisters in Spirit: volunteering together on July 12th at The Women’s Lunch Place (in the Church of the Covenant near our temple); a women’s Iftar break-the-fast dinner at day’s end on July 13th (at The Turkish Cultural Center in Revere); and an Iftar dinner for men and women on July 24th (in the same location as the women’s event). In addition, several CRT women were invited to homes of the Turkish women for more intimate family Iftar dinners near the end of Ramadan.
Volunteering at The Women’s Lunch Place was an outgrowth of a Sisters in Spirit meeting when we discussed the importance of tzedakah in both of our faith traditions. Jennifer Coplon, Leslie Warshaw, and Cathy Corman and her sister Laura from Texas were joined by Sumerya and Semiha from The Turkish Cultural Center at the Church to help other sisters in need. As we prepared, served and cleaned up an elaborate lunch organized and created by Executive Chef Joshua Birdsall, fasting Sumerya and Semiha maintained good spirits, while some of the Jewish women ate with the guests at tables where we served them a hot meal. Most of the guests live in shelters and represent all ages, races, and life circumstances. Like all of us, they wish for nurturing, acceptance, and dignity. The roll-up-your-sleeves environment among volunteers contributes to trust and a sisterhood of support. At sundown (8:28 PM) on July 13th, 6 CRT women (Jennifer, Leslie, and Cathy along with Jill Silverstein, Rabbi Devon Lerner, and Robin Neuman), enjoyed a festive, joyful, and informative Iftar dinner experience at The Turkish Cultural Center along with many others representing different religious affiliations in the Greater Boston Community.
We will be extending a warm welcome to the Turkish Cultural Center community for CRT’s High Holiday Services. In October, a meeting will be held (TBA) bringing the women back together again.
