Five years ago CRT renewed its past connection with Peace Islands Boston Dialogue Foundation, a Turkish Islamic organization with which we had a prior history of cooperating in interfaith dialogue and other programs. This time the woman from both CRT and The Turkish Cultural Center, as part of Peace Islands Institute, have come together to share spiritual and personal experiences and traditions from our unique faiths. We meet every 6-8 weeks to discuss important people (e.g., Abraham, Moses, Joseph) from both the Bible/Torah and the Qu’ran as well as significant events in our histories. We teach each other about our daily and holiday rituals and our prayer practices. We are often delighted by our shared values and similarities as well as differences in our faiths. For example, tzedakah and sadaqah are laws of charity in both Judaism and Islam, which we as Sisters practice by volunteering together at nonprofits serving the hungry, such as Greater Boston Food Bank and The Women’s Lunch Place. We have become friends and often share our holidays together, including Passover, Chanukah and Ramadan observances.
In this challenging period of polarization and discrimination in American society, there is a compelling need for American Jews and Muslims to reach out to one another. Peace Islands is a progressive Islamic community and a distinctive voice in the Muslim community, offering a particularly compatible counterpoint to our Temple’s liberal Reform Jewish commitment.
